Medicare

What Is Medicare

  1. Medicare is the federal health insurance program for People who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD)

There are two parts of Medicare: Part A and Part B

  • Part A provides inpatient/hospital coverage.
  • Part B provides outpatient/medical coverage. (Part A & Part B are what is known as "Original Medicare")
  • Part C offers an alternate way to receive your Medicare benefits (Medicare Advantage Plan).
  • Part D provides prescription drug coverage.

When Am I Eligible

  • Medicare eligibility begins for most people at age 65. However, individuals who have been entitled to Social Security disability for at least  24 months also qualify.
  • Many people confuse their Medicare Eligibility date with their Social Security retirement age. They are different. A person can apply for full retirement income benefits at around age 67. This is considered their retirement age. However, this does not affect the age at which they qualify for Medicare.
  • There is no such thing as a Medicare retirement age. The normal Medicare eligibility age for Medicare is age 65, whether you have retired or not. You can qualify for Medicare coverage at age 65 (or older) if you are a U.S citizen or a permanent resident and you’ve lived here continuously for 5 years or more.

Medicare Supplements

A Medicare Supplement is a type of health insurance sold by private insurers to cover the gaps in Medicare and what you must pay out of pocket.  This is what is referred to as a  “Medigap Plan.”  Medigap policies give you freedom to choose your own doctor. Once insured, you can never be dropped due to health reasons.

If you have a "Medigap" policy, Medicare Part A and Part B will first pay its share of your medical expenses, then your policy will step in and pay its share. This is usually the remainder of your bill. However, it depends on which policy you choose.

If you choose a Supplement you will need to consider purchasing a separate Part D Drug Plan.

Medicare Advantage (Part "C")

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a private health insurance plan approved by Medicare, (like an HMO or PPO), your providers are network based .  It is another Medicare health plan choice you may have as part of Medicare.   Some  Plans may offer extra coverage, such as vision, hearing, dental, and/or health and wellness programs.

If you choose an Advantage Plan you get your Part A, B and D benefits from the Medicare Advantage plan instead of traditional Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage plans were created as an alternative to original Medicare and Medigap.  In return, the plan will deliver all of your Part A and Part B services.

Prescription Drug "Part D"

What Is Part D

Part D, is simply insurance for your medication needs. You pay a monthly premium to an insurance carrier for your Part D plan. In return, you use the insurance carrier’s network of pharmacies or mail order to purchase your prescription medications. Rater than paying full price, you will pay a copay or percentage of the drug’s cost. The insurance company will pay the rest.

When Am I Eligible for Part D

You are eligible for Medicare Part D as long as you are actively enrolled in either Part A and/or B. You must also live in the Part D plans’s service area. Though Medicare Part D is voluntary, we strongly recommend it if you have no other drug coverage.  "Part D" provides you insurance against future catastrophic medication costs. It will also help give you lower co-pays on medications you take now.

  • Be aware that if you do not enroll in Part D and you have no other creditable coverage, you will incur late penalties when you enroll later

How Medicare Part D Works - 2025

  1. Annual Deductible:  NEW  for 2025, the allowable maximum Part D deductible is $590.   Plans may charge the full Part D deductible, a partial deductible, or waive the deductible entirely. You will pay the network discounted price for your medications until your plan calculates that you have satisfied the deductible.   (Deductible Stage)
  2. After that, you enter the next coverage stage.  MAX Out-of-Pocket:  Prescription costs are Capped at $2,000 for 2025.  That is down from $8,000 in 2024. Drug plan formulary's Tier pricing may have changed this year. In this stage you are charged a co-pay amount per medication depending on the Tier level of your drug.   The accummulation of your deductible, copay and out-of-pocket, up to the $2,000 will be your total spend for the year. (Initial Stage)
  3. NO MORE Coverage Gap - aka, The Donut Hole"  This point on and drug cost will be $0 (ZERO DOLLARS)  (Catastrophic Stage)
